Introduction

The music industry is growing faster than it ever has before. Through websites such as Myspace and Twitter, it is much easier for you to get your music out there as an artist. However, with the increasing number of artists and bands, there has been a greater push to appeal to the listener’s ear. This push has edged many closer to a sort of “mainstream” sound. Nowadays, although different musical genres exist on the radio, a certain sound has developed that appeals more than others. A sort of poppy, catchy tune is what most people agree on when it comes to music. It is rare that one finds a unique, individualistic sound on the radio.

This does not mean, however, that there are not bands out there like that. For example, The Icarus Account, a mainly acoustic band from Florida, writes and composes songs that make sense to them; they are not trying to appeal to others. On the contrary, a band called The Maine, although jump-starting their career with Myspace and various music websites, have become popular on the new alternative stations on the radio. This pop/power-punk band knew exactly what the fans wanted and thrived off of their desire. They have quickly become one of the most popular bands on the power-pop scene, continually producing songs in the genre that produce the most results popularity-wise.
